PLEASE NOTE: We provide the following renewal information as a courtesy and it may change at any time. It is the individual licensee's responsibility to be sure that he or she meets the requirements for his or her own particular license renewal circumstance(s).

  • Total Hours: 22.5
  • Mandatory/Core: 3
  • Elective: 19.5
  • Renewal Cycle: 2 years

Real estate licensee must complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education every two years. Three of the 22.5 hours must cover fair housing law, and as of January 1, 2017, at least 1 hour of the total hours must cover agency law. The Complete New York Licensee Renewal Package listed on this site meets both of these requirements. Licensees renew on the exact day of their license anniversary. Licensees are encouraged to keep printed course completion certificate(s) in the event of a New York Real Estate Commission audit.

What are the Newly Adopted Continuing Education Requirements effective July 1, 2021?
All licensees will be required to successfully complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education. The education must include at least 2.5 hours on the subject of ethical business practices, at least 1 hour of recent legal matters, at least 3 hours of instruction pertaining to fair housing and/or discrimination in the sale or rental of real property or an interest in real property, and at least 1 hour of instruction pertaining to the law of agency except in the case of the initial two-year licensing term for real estate salespersons, 2 hours of agency related instruction must be completed within the two-year period immediately preceding a renewal.
The newly adopted amendment also REMOVES the 15-year real estate broker continuing education exemption. Attorneys admitted to the New York State bar who hold a broker’s license remain exempt from the continuing education requirement.

Regulation of Online CE Courses

The New York Real Estate Commission requires that all online education providers use a timing mechanism to ensure that a minimum seat time is spent in each course (equal to 50 min per credit hour). For example, a 3-hour course must be open and active for no less than 150 minutes. The course timer mechanism will “time out” if navigation in a course is inactive for more than 15 minutes. If this happens, simply resume activity to start the timer again. For example, click the Forward Arrow button or Back Arrow button. Final exams are not required.
